Director Shankar has been accused of plagiarism and copyright violations related to his 2010 blockbuster film Robo. The ED has seized assets worth over Rs. 10 crore under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
This is the first time in India that assets have been attached under PMLA for plagiarism or copyright issues in filmmaking. On February 17th, ED seized three properties belonging to Shankar valued at Rs. 10.11 crore.
Writer Aarur Thamizh Nadan filed a complaint claiming that Robo was copied from his story Jiguba. Robo starring Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai, was a massive hit, earning Rs. 290 crore worldwide.
ED’s investigation revealed that Shankar received Rs. 11.5 crore as payment for Robo, covering story development, screenplay, dialogues, and direction.
Recently Shankar directed Game Changer with Ram Charan and Indian 2 with Kamal Haasan, but both films failed to impress audiences.
